My name is Jeff Kerr and I am married with three beautiful daughters. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 35. It was a difficult time for me as I was confused, scared and concerned about the future of my family, my health and my career. I am a law enforcement officer and didn’t know how MS will affect my job. I decided to share my situation with my co-workers and management. I was happy to find out how supportive they are. The encouragement and understanding they displayed was quite a relief.
My wife, Shannon, has been my best advocate. Her strength and caring nature have allowed me to remain optimistic about my disease, treatment and future. I love you Shannon!!!
I am a Lieutenant with the York County, VA Sheriff’s Office and an active member, and former Vice President, for the Police Unity Tour - Chapter IV. The PUT is a 250 mile bike ride from Chesapeake, VA to Washington DC every May during Police Memorial Week. Its purpose is to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. On May 13, 2008, the Police Unity Tour wrote a check to the Memorial for $1,250,000. Our motto is simple, “We Ride for those who died.”
I was diagnosed with MS in February of 2006 and wanted to become involved in the National MS Society. I formed a team, “Heroes Live Forever” and rode with seven of my co-workers, my wife, and friends in the 2006 MS 150 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. My team has grown to 55 members and hopefully we can be a part of ending the terrible effects of Multiple Sclerosis.
I am an Activist and Co-chair of the Government Relations Committee for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and attend the Public Policy Conference every year. Our mission is to lobby the United States Senate and House of Representatives in an effort to find a cure. I learned a lot about my disease, research and the impact government has on finding a cure. It is an unforgetable experience as I have the opportunity to look US Senators, Congressmen and Congresswomen in the face and tell them my story. I put a face on this disease, and as a constituent, I tell them we need change. They listened and enacted several new laws and provided funding for research. I look forward to returning to Capitol Hill on March 9-11, 2009.
I am committed to making a difference and I sincerely appreciate your support.
